How to use Reelenz

Installing Reelenz

When you first install the hanger, unwind a few meters of twine before attaching the hanger to the crop wire.

For subsequent uses of the hanger, you can pull the twine off sideways without removing the hanger from the crop wire.  Alternatively, you can turn the hanger upside down (180degrees) and it will free wheel, allowing you easily to pull as much twine from the reel as you need.

Layering with Reelenz

When the plant reaches the crop wire, it needs to be layered.  This is easily done by giving Reelenz a light squeeze between the thumb and middle finger. This releases the lock and allows the reel to rotate.

The weight of the twine pulls the twine off the reel while you can control the speed of the reel by the index finger.  At the same time, simply slide the hanger along the crop wire.

No lifting is required (unless you also want to swap to another crop wire). You can control the amount of twine released by squeeze for slightly longer or shorter periods, so during periods of summer growth, simply squeeze a bit longer to allow more twine out.  The layering can be done with just one hand.  If the plant is particularly heavy, it leaves you other hand free to guide the plant. Either hand can be used for the layering task.

End of season

At the end of the crop, if the reel is almost empty, you can simply turn Reelenz upside down to let the weight of the plant release the last bit of twine, or you can remove the hanger and release the used reel.

The hanger is now ready for the replacement reel.  If there is sufficient twine left on the reel for the next crop, simply cut the twine and you are ready for the next crop.  If the twine runs out midway through a crop, a new reel can be fitted without disrupting the plants growth. This is easily done by tying the starting point of the twine from the new reel to the taut twine close to the reel in use.

Tie a simple knot around the old twine and slide this knot up to the knot already at the top of the old twine and fit the new reel to a spare hanger next to the one in use. The change over can then be done seamlessly.
